â€Å"How many years can some people exist before theyre allowed to be free...How many times can a man turn his head pretending he just doesnt see?† The lyrics of Blowin’ in the Wind strike the painful feeling when our dignity is smothered by unbearable fear. In the short story â€Å"On the Rainy River†, Tim O’Brien explores the idea that we cannot follow our heart in the face of terror. Through his experiences, O’Brien suggests that when our insecurity clashes with our self-respect, our moral conscience is often torn into pieces until we are left with no choice but to accept the ruthless reality with a desperate heart. A society, a place, an attitude, an expectation---all of these contribute to a character’s response to threatening forces. Elroy helps Tim to open his paralyzed heart and discover his self-respect. He tells him â€Å"there is Jesus†. With Elroy by Tim’s side, he must soon face the inevitability between his dignity and insecurity. In life, every action precipitates a reaction, and facing challenge become significant. On the sixth day, Elroy take Tim on the Rainy River to fish, which becomes instrumental to guide Tim to his epiphany. When he is â€Å"on the margin of exile†, the collision of self-respect and insecurity aggravates. On the bow, Tim listens to the treacherous waves hitting the boat and feels the brisk wind pounding his face. The sound of silence coerces him into making a decision. There is a â€Å"hard squeezing pressure in [his] chest†. He is terrified. He does not know what to think. I do not want to leave my family and my childhood and my dreams and all I have behind! Having been mostly unsuccessful at raising funds through traditional methods of chanting on the streets while begging for donations, the group devised a brilliant strategy that essentially invoked the principles of reciprocation (Cialdini 1993, p.22). As an individual would pass by, a Society member, rather than ask for a donation initially, would hand the unsuspecting person a flower, offering it as a free gift from the Society and not accepting its return under any circumstances. Only then would the Society member ask for a donation (Cialdini 1993, p.22). The response was overwhelming, and a testament to the extraordinary power of reciprocation. The individual, aware that he had been given a gift and feeling the pressure to reciprocate, was often compelled to respond with a donation (Cialdini 1993, p.24). Another powerful psychological principle in a marketer’s arsenal of tools is the commitment and consistency factor (Cialdini 1993, p. 37). It has been discovered that people feel a very powerful drive to be consistent once they have committed themselves to something (Cialdini 1993, p. 37). An example of this principle at play is witnessed through the offering of testimonial contests by such big-name companies as Proctor Gamble and General Foods (Cialdini 1993, p.39). In these contests, the companies ask participants to write short essays, often for large prizes, which include praise for the companies’ products. Usually no purchase is required; what is more important is that by forcing potential customers to record, in writing, praise for the company’s product, the company relies on the psychological drive of the individual to believe what he has written (Cialdini 1993, p 40). Apart from the psychological triggers that persuade individuals to comply with given requests, marketers must seek to understand the equally intriguing psychological processes at work in the unconscious mind that cause consumers to choose one particular course of action, or product, over another (Zaltman 2003, p.53). One example of such an unconscious process can be seen in the overwhelming tendency of customers to choose a product offered for $9.99 over an identical one offered for $10.00 (Zaltman 2003, p64). Consumer Need: Practicality Or Emotionality? It has been stated that, contrary to popular belief, people do not so much buy things they don’t need, but that the need is often based more upon emotions and feelings than it is upon concrete physical necessity (Danziger 2004, p.1). Though the gross domestic product in the United States has largely been generated by consumer spending since 1929-a full 60 to 70 percent of it- â€Å"the way consumers [generally] spend their money has changed significantly over the past 70 years (Danziger 2004, p.3).† It is claimed that, â€Å"today, over 40 percent of consumer spending is discretionary†¦ based on wants, not needs (Danziger 2004, p.4).† Changing Trends And Their Affect On The Marketplace Another important factor in predicting consumer behavior involves changing trends in the marketplace. Marketers must be ever vigilant to customers’ changing needs as society evolves and new events cause consumers’ wants and needs to adjust accordingly. A clear example of this is witnessed by the fairly recent change in menu selections offered by fast-food chains such as McDonald’s and Burger King. Responding to a concern over the rising tide of obesity in the U.S. and around the world and consumers’ increasing desire to maintain healthier lifestyles, such fast-food conglomerates have been adding healthier choices to their menu selections which includes salads, apple slices instead of French fries, and so on (Plunkett Research 2005). Another example of a change in consumer behavior was reflected in consumers’ response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The airline industry, facing huge setbacks as a result of consumers’ new reluctance to travel by air for fear of another terrorist attack, was forced to undergo massive restructurings to accommodate the new environment imposed upon them (Plunkett Research 2005). Consumers, wishing to reconcile their fears and need to reduce expenditures with the desire to continue enjoying and experiencing life as usual, were searching for ways-and bargains- to enable them to do this. Hence, there began a shift in the airline industry away from luxury to economy, as discount airlines began setting the new standard for air travel by luring passengers with price, not perks (Plunkett Research 2005). With Southwest Airlines and JetBlue leading the pack, these airlines have achieved success and profitability responding to consumers’ changed needs, mainly by cutting maintenance, operating and labor costs, such as by offering a single-plane platform and an open-seating policy (Plunkett Research 2005). In the meantime, of course, as full-service airlines have struggled to compete with the burgeoning success of the discount model, some, like Delta, have begun developing their own low-cost models, which manage to keep costs down by hiring younger flight crews. Only occasionally will a larger magnitude earthquake strike and cause damageto the region. Around the world there are many faults, depending wherethese faults are plays a major factor in determining where an earthquakewill happen. It is these faults that are the reason for earthquakes. Thetype of fault will also determine how often an earthquake will happen. A mid-ocean ridge occurs under the seaat a divergent boundary. This is where two plates are been pulled apartbecause of tension. This then allows new oceanic crust to be made in thedivergent boundary, as magma rises and eventually sets on the sea floor. If the plates on either side of the divergentboundary continue to spread then the ocean slowly becomes larger in width,a process called seafloor spreading. Mid-ocean ridges are characterisedby a crack like valley at the divergent boundary. This crack like valleyis caused by the tension pulling the plates apart, causing normal faultingto occur a number of times in the divergent boundary. It is these normal faults that are thecause and therefore the origin of earthquakes at divergent boundaries. When the tension pulling apart the two plates becomes too much then theoceanic crust will fracture. This fracturing is caused by many normal faultshappening as shown in the diagram. The normal faults happen because thecrust is been extended. When the tension becomes too much the faults slipvertically. They move a large distance in a relatively short space of time,this is the cause of the earthquakes at divergent boundaries. Divergent boundaries mostly occur on thesea floor and therefore the earthquakes that happen at these boundariesare distributed along the boundary. This means that the distributions ofearthquakes at divergent boundaries are at shallow depths, where the crustis been pulled apart. The earthquakes happen at shallow depths becausethe normal faulting occurs near the sea floor, as a result of the tension. The normal faults are the cause of the earthquakes at these divergent boundaries. The seafloor sees the most intense tectonicactivity in the world, meaning that at the sites of mid-ocean ridges thefrequency of earthquakes is very high. An example of a mid-ocean ridge is theMid-Atlantic ridge, there the seafloor is spreading at a rate of about3cm per year. The frequency of earthquakes at a mid-ocean ridge will dependon how much tension is happening at that point. The more tension meansthe more seafloor spreading, resulting in a higher frequency of earthquakesat a particular mid-ocean ridge. Four major oceans make up most of the waterin the world, The Atlantic (north south), The Pacific, The Antarcticand The Indian Ocean. Within the basins of these oceans earthquakes canhappen without been caused at Mid-ocean ridges, or a Subduction Zones. The first person might also be once or twice removed from the story: They heard it from a friend or a friend of a friend (or some other indirect source). But keep in mind before you hire this applicant that it’s a challenge to keep the first-person narrator from telling too much, and that such a person is subjective and therefore unreliable. (Actually, that can be a good thing, dramatically speaking.) First person is an effective device especially for action-oriented genre fiction: detective stories, thrillers, and the like, because this type of narration keeps the reader close to the action and privy to the cogitations of the protagonist, who is usually trying to solve a mystery or foil a plot. Second Person The second person (â€Å"You†) doesn’t get much work. You might think second person is the most engaging type of narrative, because it puts the reader in the thick of the action, but the device gets old quickly. However, it can be used incidentally, in a prologue or in one or more asides, cued by the first-person or third-person narrator. Third Person This narrative device (â€Å"He,† â€Å"She,† â€Å"They†) is the most common, for good reason(s): The third-person narrator is an objective observer who describes and interprets the characters and their actions, thoughts and feelings, and motivations without direct knowledge. (That objectively doesn’t always prevent the narrator from making satirical or otherwise judgmental observations, however.) But before you leap up and cast this role, there’s one more decision to make: Is this narrator omniscient, meaning they know all, or are they, like the characters, limited in their knowledge? Beyond that, is the third person partisan about the proceedings, or neutral? Consider, too, that just like a first-person narrator, the third person might be unreliable: An observer, whether they have limited or unlimited access to knowing what the heck’s going on, may have a mischievous streak and decide to deceive the reader. Tense Regardless of who you hire, one more issue needs to be resolved: tense. Will the narrator describe occurrences in the present (â€Å"I steal over to the sofa and make sure the gun appears to have fallen out of her hand†), or in the past (â€Å"I stole over to the sofa and made sure the gun appeared to have fallen out of her hand.†)? Just as with second person, a little present-tense narration goes a long way, but a short short story can be effective in that form, or you can introduce present tense in digestible morsels in a longer work, such as when a character is recalling an incident. The primary purpose of this paper is to give an ethical appraisal of the place of man (understood as a human person) in various business organizations. This paper will unearth three important elements that gives man his identity of uniqueness:- Respect, Solidarity and Liberty (Freedom). These are the fundamental principles that make us most human. The Threefold Values of The Human Person Respect in the workplace This is the fundamental attitude of giving value to somebody or something. This value demands that we do not destroy the being or the essence of another person who has the right to be and operate the way he is convinced of. However, this value of respect should be in consonance with rule of law and healthy customs. Man has the fundamental right to enjoy respect either as an employer or employee in the workplace. Any effort to deprive him of this fundamental value reduces man to a mere object that has lost its value. Respectful behavior in the organization most times is as a result of organizational culture. Respect is fostered when employees/employers are valued, when people treat others the way they would love to be treated, when conflicts are resolved swiftly and successfully, when there is courtesy in communication, and when disrespectful behavior is suitably addressed. Solidarity (Communion of persons over alienation) The concept of solidarity is not just the idea of projecting unity of message and vision in the workplace among workers; it is most importantly the art of valuing our fellow human beings and respecting the uniqueness of the individual person. The world is a one human family; solidarity among workers in the workplace enables the organization to build a community of people that empowers everyone to attain their full potential by respecting the dignity of each other, the rights and responsibilities of each other. Solidarity is the idea that together we can make a difference. Solidarity demands a sharing of the different qualities, characteristics and talents that we have in the production process. The value of solidarity in the work place is manifest in the formation of trade unions to improve the collective behaviors of the seller of the power of labor and the employers with the intention of protecting their standards structurally. Some researchers have criticized the idea of socialism on the basis that it is against human nature. For them, it is contra naturam. This is the basic idea of Alex Callinicos when he writes; â€Å"you can’t change human nature. Any attempt to create a society free of poverty, exploitation and violence is bound to run up against the fact that human beings are naturally selfish, greedy and aggressive†. (2004; P. 65). For Karl Marx, the whole idea of an unchanging human nature was a mere abstraction. The essence of man for him is not an abstraction inherent in a single individual; rather it is an amalgamation of social relations. Be that as it may, there is nothing like human nature in the abstract. Human beliefs, the desires of women and men change as the society changes. It is the need to ensure that human solidarity is not threatened that enables employees to form labor unions. According to Karl Marx, (1967; P. 54), â€Å"employees may seek collective actions to relieve their feelings of alienation about work conditions. The employees at this point become aware of the common plight (solidarity) and that their resulting class consciousness would push them to overthrow the capitalist system†. Solidarity indeed is the basis of unionism. This Marxs theory should be understood from the perspective of the adversity and poverty suffered by workers in France, Germany and England around 19th-century. The Industrial Revolution within this period was an eye opener and created a seemingly set of workers, most of whom were living in abject poverty, under terrible working conditions without any political representation In the context of this article, solidarity has to do with the relationship between business organizations and those groups, which while they have strong economic interest are not exclusively economic societies. The union of goals and interest, as the case may be, could not be described in strict economic terms and be considered as a firm, social, ethical and political dimensions. It is not only concerned with wages, but also with working conditions and with the distribution of power in the economy. Freedom rooted in conscience Freedom is one if not the most fundamental value of the human person. Freedom gives the human person his dignity.. His freedom goes beyond the self-development and expression, it cuts across real liberty; access to income and wealth. This liberty enables man to have access to the resources of the society ranging from money, other material goods, offices, jobs and titles. No value on earth makes one happier than the sense and taste of freedom. When this sense permeates in the workplace, you will experience a team of happier colleagues around in the workplace. Different companies have different ways of seeking and achieving freedom. According to the Economic Times, (6th August, 2010), there are different ways of going about the idea of freedom in the workplace. Man is the maker of values. For Shappiro, S.L (1980; p. 80), Man is a dynamic being, and this dynamism enables him to transmit from values earlier made to some newly made values. Basically, these values of man especially about freedom are not based only on the world of commerce; rather they are humanistic so long as they are deeply rooted in the nature of man. Sadly as it may seem, most of the values underlying the model of the economy and its typical implementation as found in most business organizations, have been very inconsistent with the nature of man. As such, this would at the extreme cause reduction in motivation and work morale. At this point, it is pertinent to highlight some of the basic values made by man in business organizations. Business Codes of Ethics and values made by man in Business Organizations Business codes of ethics or standard of conduct in any business setting highlights the values of the organization, its ethics, tasks and goals which include the need to respect and value the dignity of the human person (employees) in the organization. It also guides the employees on how to go about some ethical circumstances that may arise in the workplace One might ask how it is possible for workplace code of ethics to bring about ethical behavior in business. Though it has been stressed a lot that the best way to sustain the standard of morality and ethics in the organization is by those in the leadership positions leading with examples, this is not always the case in large companies where there is growth in culture brought about by increase in the number of staff and employees. In this situation, business standard of ethics becomes one of the lasting resorts to maintain a standing rule of morality in the workplace. Man is the creator of these organizational values, and as well the destroyer of the values. Sometimes man in the organization is alienated from labor, product, nature, state, and often times from himself. There is a high tendency for man to be a wolf to man in the organization through unhealthy rivalry, struggling to succeed at the expense of the other at all costs. These situations have deprived man of his naturally deserved respect to the extent that man has been debased. This condition breeds envy, division in the organization. And in this kind of organization, it becomes difficult, if not impossible to run an ethically conscious business organization. The primary essence of the business codes of ethics is to protect the fundamental rights of man (employees) in the organization. These fundamental rights should not be violated in any means whatsoever. Man needs to feel his contribution in the workplace valued, else he feels frustrated and alienated. There should be some elements of team work and cooperation in the workplace to carry everyone along as stipulated in the business codes of ethics. Besides all these, the most valuable and guarded aspect of the human value in the organization is his dignity. Man is not a working machine, rather a being with worth and dignity as an individual. Be that as it may, it is obvious that whatever man does has some ethical implications. In the business organizations, man needs to be treated as an end and never as a means to an end. Evaluation And Conclusion This paper has strived to re-establish the fundamental value of man as a being with dignity even as he engages in business practices in the any organization. These fundamental human rights of man set him apart from other lower animals. In business organizations, employees are treated like working machines which can be put to work at will and dumped at will. Gender Dichotomies on MTV TV is a worldwide phenomenon that has defined an entire generation. Six out of ten households receive MTV as part of their basic cable service, and adolescents spend, on average, two hours a day watching the network (Signorelli, McLeod, & Healy 92). This is not only in America. Viacom, MTV’s parent company, claims to reach 320 million households in 90 countries on 5 continents for 24 hours a day (Mundy 240). Such a large spanning audience has many worried about the great world influence the network has. One such questionable effect of MTV is the power the network to perpetuate the stereotypes depicting women as purely sexual beings, not respectable individuals. This is a difficult controversy to discern because it is only "the latest skirmish in a never ending culture war between young women trying to control their sexuality and a society which fears its power," (When Sex Goes Pop) MTV’s sexual depictions have been criticized because of the poor representation and explicit sexualization of women and young girls. To sexualize is to make the performer or extra in a music video worthless aside from his or her sexual appeal. Please note that I did say "his" or "her", but by the end of my paper you will know that, statistically, the overwhelming number of individuals whom are sexualized are female. I believe something needs to be done to stop this, but others do not perceive these "sexual video images" as a threat. These people seem to discount such displays as rock-n-roll culture and believe that people are wasting their time overanalyzing music videos. These MTV supporters, artists, and record executives perceive the scantily clad women as a display of self-assurance or a well-made business decisio... ...hese should not include the MTV-esque scantily clad overly made up women that they see in music videos. Rather, they should be presented of self-assured, realistic looking, kind women who make positive contributions to society. Young girls should not be emulating Britney who allows herself to be manipulated by powerful record executives; rather, girls should be looking up to real women who are capable of overcoming adversity. Miracles bring much happiness and joy to people and the act can rarely be explained, surely these acts are a great act of God and must be good if they bring happiness. People also believe God is good because he keeps human kind in some sort of order.Law breaking is bad therefore we are punished if we do break the law. The law is there to make us be good individuals and do the right thing according to society. When we follow the law we are told we are being good and are rewarded with a chance to go to Heaven, this is told to us in the Bible. A chance at getting to Heaven is an incentive for us to do good deeds and abide the law. We then read from this that if we are good we are rewarded and if we are bad we are punished which keeps people abiding by the law and why so many people over thousands of years have been scared at the prospect of going to Hell.People could view this as God keeping us in line and not letting us stray and do the wrong thing; in essence h e is saving us from going to Hell by creating laws and putting them in place so we know what is right and wrong. Do you know how scary it is to be in that unconscious state due to a punch in the face?   I can tell you it’s something you’d never want your children to ever experience. When I was 6 years old, me and my friend were playing catch in our apartment complex in Pico River California on a bright sunny day. Everything seems to be going well until I threw the ball a little too far away from my friend to catch. It accidently hit a boy that was in a group of his friends. They seem to be in the 5th grade perhaps middle school by then. I was only in first grade at the time. The angry group of kids walked up to me and my buddy and asked â€Å"Who the f*#k threw that ball†!? I replied, â€Å"I did, but I didn’t mean for it to go that far I’m so sorry†. I turned and pointed to my friend and said â€Å"He was supposed to catch it†. By the time I turned my head towards the boy who was yelling at my face I just remembered feeling a great force in my left eye and everything went blank. I tried to focus on what happened but everything was a blur and I didn’t even know where I was at anymore. By the time I stood up crying my bloody eye out, the groups of boys ran off and I had to get carried up to my apartment door where I lived. I got sucker punched without even realizing what happened. In that moment I knew, I never want to experience that scary moment ever again. I started to understand that I got knocked out because I took my eyes off the kid for a split second and once you do that, you never know what could happen the next second. My mother was devastated that it happened because I was such a happy-go-lucky kid growing up until I got punched in the face. She ended up putting me into karate classes as a kid and it taught me so much knowledge that I wish I knew before that day. Karate taught me that you should never take your eyes off your opponent and to never underestimate anyone under any circumstances. In middle school, I encountered another problem where this kid was jealous of me because I was with a girl he liked. We ended up meeting after school where we settled out his problem against me. With the knowledge I had in karate, I ended up showing that kid to never cause me problems ever again, same goes for his friend that attended the fight. I am now currently in boxing helping out many young kids who are just starting to get into the martial arts world due to some sort of bullying incident they had at school. Yet, there are some parents out there that think putting their kid through any fighting classes is â€Å"dangerous†. Let me assure you, it’s a very smart decision you can do for the safety of your child inside and outside the classes themselves. Martial art classes don’t just throw your kid in the ring for another child the beat the sense out of them. Normally, they can’t spare with anyone else without their parent’s permission and attendance. They teach your kids discipline, respect, confidence, and most importantly, physical health. Your child will not only become more educated on a street fight whenever they encounter one, but to also respect the people around them at all times knowing that they have the training they developed in class. Plus, it’s a great way to be more involved in your little one’s life by always supporting them and having fun watching them have fun. Today, bullying is something that is very hard to stay away from. Trouble lurks around every corner of the playground or campus in general. Even outside of school, you may run into trouble without doing anything to cause it. It’s sad that at any time, someone may way up to your child and want to start problems over nothing or just to take their money or possessions away from them. Being able to predict something happening ahead of time is something the classes will teach you as well. For example, if you see a group of kids or just someone approaching you, you will be able to tell if they are just casually walking by or may do something to you without hesitation. Being alert and focused can put you in a step ahead of the situation before they even begin to try anything with you. Knowing what to do and when to do it can help you potentially save your own life. A lot of children these days lack the physical conditioning that can help them save themselves from bullies or just to be able to be healthy in general. The classes will put them through a lot of fun physical conditioning that will make them healthier and grow up to live a healthy lifestyle. Appreciating your health at a young age can provide a long meaningful life for your children. With many types of games, there are many different effects that affect our life and most of them are bad. The first and also the most dangerous problem is violence. With these solutions, we can control the problem and make it become a powerful tool for everybody around the world.
